PORTLAND, Ore. — The Rev. Jesse Jackson on Tuesday called the fatal police shooting of an unarmed black man an execution and criticized plans to allow the officer to return to regular duty this week.
The civil rights leader appeared Tuesday night at a rally that drew a standing room only crowd of more than 1,200 people to a Portland church.
He also met with the family of Aaron Campbell, who was killed Jan. 29, and called for a special prosecutor and investigation. Family lawyers have contacted the U.S. Justice Department, he said.
“What happened to Aaron is not a matter of black and white, it’s a matter of wrong and right,” Jackson said at a news conference.
A Multnomah County grand jury last week declined to take action against Officer Ronald Frashour, who is white, but sent a letter to the prosecutor saying “something went terribly, terribly wrong.”
Campbell was shot in the back after emerging from an apartment with his hands over his head. He was reportedly distraught over the death of his brother earlier in the day. Frashour has said he thought Campbell was reaching toward his waistband for a weapon.
The grand jury found Frashour’s actions were consistent with the use of deadly force. But jurors said in a letter to District Attorney Michael Schrunk that “our sympathies lie with the Campbell family and the mood of the community.”
Black leaders rallied last week to call for changes in the Portland Police Bureau and to criticize police for what they said was a pattern of excessive force against minorities.
Jackson told reporters on Tuesday that Campbell’s treatment was “beneath the dignity of man, beneath the dignity of this community.”
“There was no threat to the man who pulled the trigger,” he said.
Jackson also met with Mayor Sam Adams, Police Chief Rosie Sizer and City Commissioner Dan Saltzman on Tuesday.
Saltzman, who oversees the police, told The Oregonian that he would consider Jackson’s suggestion that Frashour not return to regular duty Wednesday, as scheduled. He did not immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press.

UPDATE: Each police victim had children and had been with the Lakewood force since its creation in 2004. They are (left to right, clockwise):
- Ronald Owens. Owens, 37, had 12 years of law enforcement experience. He is survived by a former wife and a daughter.
- Tina Griswold. Griswold, 40, had 14 years of law enforcement experience. She is survived by her husband and two children.
- Sgt. Mark Renninger. Renninger, 39, had 13 years of law enforcement experience and is survived by a wife and three children.
- Greg Richards. Richards, 42,had eight years of law enforcement experience. He is survived by a wife and three children.
That is a black who killed 4 innocent police officers, is that ok? I bet he was treated unfairly too just because of his race...

-HOW ABOUT THIS THAT JUST HAPPENED?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3w-P-Tfbz9EThis guy went around threatening to shoot police officers and shot and killed a 19 year old girl. He spits on the police, screams at them. And apparently his rights were violated? He deserves a good arse beating! He MURDERED a 19 year old girl. Does she not matter? Do the death threats that he told the cops not matter? Cops are human too, what gives him the right to go around making threats and spitting on them?
I COULD GO ON FOREVER.
Comment:
JESSE JACKSON NEEDS TO GET THE HATE OUT OF HIS HART FOR WHITE OFFICERS IN GENERAL. HIS HATE BLINDS HIM TO THE TRUTH IN ALL SITUATIONS. ALL HE DOES IS RALLY MORE MINORITIES TO BECOME MORE VIOLENT TOWARD OFFICERS OF THE LAW AND WHITE PEOPLE IN GENERAL AND NEXT TIME THERE IS A SITUATION OF BLACK VS WHITE THE BLACK INDIVIDUAL WILL REMEMBER THIS ONCE AGAIN AND ACT OUT OF HATE RATHER THAN REASON.
