Health Care Bill Passes

It's a long-awaited victory forhealth care advocates: the passage of the House of Representatives' health care reconciliation bill.

"This has not only been just a year-long campaign, it's been really a 30-year campaign," said Mary Clark, the statewide coordinator for Health Care for America Now.

Some of the changes promised by the bill: insurance companies can't drop coverage for adults who become seriously ill or refuse coverage to children with pre-existing conditions.

Congressman Maurice Hinchey calls it one of the most important pieces of legislation passed by Congress, but is troubled because some concerns, like controlling the price of Medicare prescriptions, were left out.

"The cost of Medicare has been driven up by the fact that the price of prescription drugs in the context of Medicare is not negotiable," said Hinchey.

The overall costs of the Health Reform Bill is a main concern of Congressman Michael Arcuri -- one of the Democrats to vote against the bill.

"I believe the health care bill I voted against yesterday will raise health care insurance premiums and costs for hundreds of thousands of families, seniors and small businesses in my district who already have insurance," said Arcuri.

Arcuri also says greater access to Medicaid will place a large financial burden on already cash-strapped states -- something the group Health Care for America Now says isn't an issue in New York.

"We already provide Medicaid coverage for people up to 150% of poverty already, so we're not adding additional burden," said Clark.

Clark says with a 58% reimbursement from the federal government, health care costs will remain manageable in New York.

The bill next goes onto the Senate, where lawmakers will vote on the changes approved by the House. Some predict Republicans will try to killl the bill...but Hinchey says there aren't enough votes to block it.

With this new bill won't it add to even more unemployment? Doctors? All that will be left is the welfare cheapy doctors that are very much unskilled.. Scary thought..

As for congress and Obongo passing this bill, how can they vote on something that will not effect them? This bill will change nothing for them.. WE THE PEOPLE will be the ones effected by it. Obongo probably has his own doctors. You will not see his face standing in line receiving poor health care..
I could go on forever of how absurd this bill is, but I am sure that plenty of intelligent people know how much it sucks..
