Amid a national debate over Arizona's tough new immigration law, Republican Alabama gubernatorial candidate Tim James (and son of previous Gov. Fob James) vows in a new campaign ad that if he's elected, he'll give the state driver's license exam only in English, as a cost-saving measure.
"This is Alabama; we speak English," he says in the ad. "If you want to live here, learn it."
It's not clear how James thinks the change would save the state money. Marc Ambinder of the Atlantic says Alabama could actually lose billions of dollars in federal funding if it enacts the measure, and he points to an Alabama political blog that runs down the legal history for why the exams are in multiple languages.
James says he's been attacked by the left for the ad, singling out MSNBC host Rachel Maddow. A writer on her blog called the ad "just plain mean" and argued it was simply pandering to the candidate's conservative base.
"I have come under attack and under assault by a very interesting group of far-left reporters," he said Monday, according to the Birmingham News. He said English exams are a public safety issue, to ensure drivers can read signs. Exams are currently given in Arabic, Chinese, English, Farsi, French, German, Greek, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish, Thai and Vietnamese, according to AOL News.

It is great to see that the "Tim James is a racist" comments on the yahoo page have been mostly hidden and replied to appropriately! For once I think people are waking up!

My ancestors are not to be compared with the scum who flee to America by the hundreds only to use up what OUR ancestors have built. They are cowards who do not have the gumption to fight their crook government and help their people. Instead they just think of themselves and run away here to America to receive handouts! And why do we want such weak people like the above in our country? Could you imagine if our country was in the state theirs is in? What do you think they would do?

There is a HUGE difference between our ancestors being of immigrants versus the ones who come here now. That just ticks me off so much.. I am OFFENDED that such people would even compere my intelligent, hardworking ancestors to such loser parasites!

WHY are people so sympathetic towards immigrants? That is what is killing us! immigrants are taking advantage of that. Of our sympathetic attitude towards them. They are not helpless.
They have a brain just like any other human being on this earth. I guess it depends on how they use it. Or what they use it for.
Why should we have to supply them with the things we have created?
We baby them as if they are a helpless child. We nurture them. We give them all we have. etc. etc.
They are not children!
And why is it our responsibility to take care of them? How do you think we got our country started? We did not run. We did not get hand outs. We stuck with it and got the job done! No matter how tough it was. Our ancestors stuck with it!
